Sydney Metro Opening

Now that the City Metro has been opened, the original North West Metro is linked to the City.

MWA in association with Turpin Crawford and Hassell, designed the 8 new stations from Cherrybrook to Tallawong.
Artists Turpin Crawford Studio and MWArchitecture worked collaboratively with the station architects Hassell for over 5 years to integrate the line-wide art project ‘Light Line Social Square‘ into the architecture and landscapes of the new metro. The art concept remembers the historic orchards and agriculture that flourished in this part of Sydney since the late 18th century. The grid of the orchard becomes the grid of both the grove and station plaza, whilst the colour of the produce becomes the colour of each station.

Starting with cherry red at Cherrybrook, 2 reds, 2 oranges, 2 yellows and 2 greens are laid out in a spectrum array along the 8 stations. Over the next few weeks we will present 7 elements that manifest the artistic devices of grid, colour, light and time. These elements combine to create the immersive and ever-changing experience of the stations and include; colour-ways, urban groves, social spheres, skylight lanterns, light screen facades, terrace lines and light lines.
