Lata Lane

Lata Lane, Speculation into what might have been.

This project was a speculation on a recently built development. The project is remarkable as it was at the scale of large industrial block, which was converted into a fine grain residential housing. They got one thing right. A new laneway!

All else is dire and grim.

What might have been a rich, mixed use and multi-faceted lane was only imagined and built as a mono-culture of garages. The speculation project nearly doubled the number of dwellings by adding garage top studios along the lane, which was enabled by creating a slightly wider and more shallow terrace. 2 terraces were lost but more than 20 lane way dwellings were added. The terraces became 3 levels.

In this way the lane and the street became a little more dense and a lot more vibrant with a range of dwelling types. The lane could be widened selectively for some landscape and shade.
