George Street Furniture Concept

This project, in association with Deuce Design is a part of recent transformations made to Sydney CBD, in particular, the introduction of public walkways and plazas, emphasising a more pedestrian focused CBD. The design developed from both the cultural history and geographic reality of the place, connecting the elements/ furniture to the locality through materiality.

The use of sandstone reinforces strength as a barrier and forms the underlying foundational element of the project, serving as a medium for narration, way finding, building and sculpting throughout Sydney’s history. The design is not a series of free-standing barriers, but rather a unique long device: two Security Threads, formed from sandstone and steel, ubiquitous and utilitarian, forming the quiet spine, ribbon and thread of the project. The design approach for an urban element works simultaneously at the level of abstraction and figuration, between the specific and the generic, between play and program. It is both furniture and urban element; a bollard and beautiful form; Obect d’arte and object.
