This project was a major redesign of the primary retail street in Wollongong to recreate it as the City’s premier shopping and civic street. What was a cluttered, run down space was transformed into a linear urban room, that reconnected this street as a place between the escarpment and the ocean.
MWA worked with GAO on the concept of the asymmetric set out of elements maximising the attributes of prospect down towards the ocean, aspect from the North and a simple organisation of the drainage, that worked with the existing levels.
A new spine of eucalypts set out along the length of the street, acts as the primary organising element for the placement of bespoke furniture and lighting, including the 200 hundred “tidal lanterns” that thread through the trees along the 300 metre length of the street.
